Graffiti takes time to perfect, but something just as illegal and faster is stickers. Grabbing stickers, graffing those and slapping them on a lamp post… The cons of these are that they can also be removed and way easier than the spray paint. This project is an exploration of stickers out there that are best suited for graffiti artist. That means sticker that last longer up on a lamp post, are not easy to peel off and can resist the more weather changes while up in a street.
First lets start of with the different types of stickers, these are the materials stickers are made from:
- Paper: most stickers are made of paper, these are usually glossy and thin… if you buy sticker books with butterflies and bees on them; those are all made of paper.
- Litho: the second most common material for stickers and labels, its is non-glossy and easy to write one… postal labels and sticky price tags are made of litho.
- Plastic: the same as vinyl, this material makes stickers more flexible and more durable and resistant… these are often found in clear and are sold as bumper stickers and for windows.
- Foil: this is the sticker with the shinny surface, the most flexible material Labels that utilizes that foil stock usually have shiny surfaces, yet these labels are also flexible enough to be used on curved surfaces.
- Cardboard: a thick, long lasting material, not very flexible and thick stickers often used on scrapbooks.
Now for the testing. Tricky thing about stickers is they are long lasting only on certain surfaces. For testing each sticker material was tested on the most commonly found surfaces of the streets:
- Cement: if on the streets you post on walls, staircases, buildings…
- Steel/Metal: as in lamp post, street polls, subway stations…
- Wood: like doors, coverings for construction sites, benches…
- Glass: post on windows, doors for banks and fancy stores, mirrors…
- Plexi Glass: or plastic, for light coverings, trash cans…
These are all store-bought stickers each made of the materials mentioned above:

I cut each in half for the testing:

Here’s the test!
In conclusion:
- Cement:
paper and its adhesive will not stick
litho stickers are harder to peel off
plastic its adhesive will not stick
foil, dont use foil
cardboard, will not last 5 minutes up
- Steel/Metal:
paper breaks off quickly
litho hard to get off but consider with weather, it will just destroy
plastic easy and clean peel off but will not destroy, weather resistant
foil, dont use foil
cardboard sticks well and does not peel off easily but consider with weather, it will just destroy
- Wood:
paper does not peel off easily, best use here
litho hard to peel of but gets destroyed
plastic, dont use plastic
foil, dont use foil
cardboard, too thick for this material… the thinner the better with wood
- Glass:
paper peels off hard and leaves a mess
litho peels off hard and leaves a mess
plastic peels off easy and clean
foil peels off easy and clean
cardboard peels off hard and leaves a smaller mess than paper
- Plexi Glass:
same as glass
